Hi MD friends! This is an unusual site update but it has gained enough attention that we need to address it directly:
On June 17th 2026, The Daily Telegraph [*] published an article about Gen-Z and MiniDisc [*]. Some of the points made in that article are refuted by community members, but most significant are the quotations falsely attributed to a Wiki admin, or outright fabricated.
This is not a disagreement between how the author sees the MD scene vs how we see it. It is purely a case of journalistic malpractice. The email chain in the linked Reddit post shows the wide gap between the communication with the author and what was actually published.
To reiterate: things were placed in quotations and claimed to be said verbatim by a named member of the wiki team despite that person not saying those things at all. This harms the reputation of that person, the reputation of the wiki, and the reputation of the community as a whole. But more significant is that a respected(*) newspaper allowed such lies to be published under their name. It is defamation.
As soon as we were aware of the malpractice, we contacted the author and included the Telegraph's editorial board for review. You can read this correspondence [*] in the comments of the Reddit thread linked above. As of time of writing this post (2am PT on Friday the 19th) we have not heard back from either the author or the editorial board, nor has the flawed article been corrected.
Shortly after publishing the email chain publicly, we heard from a legendary artist in the Vaporwave scene who revealed that the misattributed quote was actually by him and that he had also contacted the author of the article for a correction. We sincerely apologize for how our reaction to the misattributed quotes may have painted him in a bad light or if any statements made in anger reflected poorly on him. That was never our intent and we do not want to use the good faith words of others against them when taken out of context or otherwise misused. Once again, CSC: please accept our apologies. We both deserved better from the journalist, and you deserved better from us.
Outside of this unpleasant distraction, we are happy(?) to announce that we're still working on the wiki infrastructure as the bot swarms are continuing. Wiki “stuff” is a priority for the next little while until the situation is stable and reliable enough to step away again. And there are several really exciting things to share soon!
Stay tuned and thanks for your understanding during this exceptionally difficult time.
