Hi MD friends! Despite predicting the end of the bot swarm a few months ago, it has returned with a vengeance. Rather than “simply” knocking the site offline, it is now targeting WMDpro and our oversized file storage (used for label templates, mirroring archived sites, and full public wiki backups.) As a result, the hosting charges for April were over US$200. I don’t really want to pay the value of a used Honda Civic every year, and I don’t expect the community to do so either.
Instead, we’re going to be aggressively optimizing our hosting. This means a new main wiki VM, moving object storage to Cloudflare, and finding a way to keep the remote encoders online even when we need to turn on that “under attack” captcha. During this time, there will likely be outages or dead links, which will be fixed as quickly as possible. This will be our largest infrastructure change in several years and as stated previously, the wiki is a hobby project so please be patient and understanding while we fight against this barrage.
Expect updates here and on Reddit shortly, especially when anticipating a major change or switch-over.
